Chokes thread on the inside of the barrel; how does a shotgun can get installed?

I saw a picture of one a guy had made out of an extended choke tube. He had about an inch of threads cut into the extended portion so that he could screw a can onto it.
Don't know what kind of can he was using on it or what shotgun it fitted but it was a pretty simple set up though I'm not sure about its legality.
