I'll go first.

The Winchester Model 50 in 12 gauge is one of the best shotguns ever made.

It does it's job with no complaints and ignores the pundits that may think that they could have drastically changed history.

I went to a bird hunt a few weeks ago in south Georgia. There were a lot of fancy upscale $5000 Italian shotguns.

The Winchester Model 50 did twice as well as the expensive shotguns. We would have probably had to go eat at the local McDonalds except for the Winchester Model 50s.

Own one too. displayed it on this site some time ago Nice useable shotgun, its a pre-64 FW and sports a FC 30"bbl' Clean like new. No scratches etc..
tempted to have bbl cut to 26 or 28 and chokes IC for grouse or skeet. built like a rock. nothing cheap about it. My only wish is that it was a sixteen instead of twelve, I do not believe they made them in sixteen.

No did not cut bbl !! never. not a good idea !

Love my dad's M50. It jammed on him constantly. Got it out the last week and it looked like he had never cleaned the inside. Completely disassembled and cleaned it thouroughly. Setup the bolt so it has about 3/16" play from the open position. Fired some cheap 12ga shells without any problems, other than the very first shell doesn't want to feed from the magazine correctly.

Is it my loading technique? If I chamber the first round by hand, rounds from the magazine feed correctly, with very consistant ejection. All six rounds I fired fell within about one foot of each other!

Ordered a barrel with a Cutts Compensator for targets, as the original 30 inch barrel has a full choke.

Any guidance on correct technique when loading and firing this shotgun?

guns design causes the bolt to squat when it recoils. this forces recoil down the grip and not in your shoulder. the gun tends to drop at the butt when this happens (a good thing.) make sure you have a sticky shirt and hold it tight in your shoulder.
try cleaning the mag tube. remove trigger group. knock the pin out the top of the tube and use a dowel to ram out the alloy plug from the receiver end. catch the spring or it will take off on you. your mag spring sounds weak. stretch it a little and reinstall. wolfe spring co should have one if you want to change it.
as bbl heats, metal expands. forearm bolt expands too. this loosens forearm, so owners tighen it. but then gun cools. cooling forearm bolt now crushes wood forearm, then splits forearm like a nut cracker because owner tightened bolt as it heated.
always store f.a. bolt loose.
after firing if forearm bolt did expand and you did have to tighten it, loosen immediately for it to cool. itll save you forearm from splitting.

I had a great model 50 20 gauge. Round post rib, not a scratch on it. Beautiful gun. I’m a lifelong model 12 shooter, so I naturally like 50s. I’ve never felt a smoother action on an auto.
