What do you keep in your HD Shotgun?

I don't hunt, so I'm not familiar with the kind of trauma certain loads will cause.

I have a 12g Mossberg 500 Tactical I keep mounted to the back side of my headboard and I've always kept birdshot in it. I have kids in three bedrooms and I don't want 00Buck or slugs in my shotgun.

Should birdshot stop an instruder?

yes, and it will go thru walls too. i have first hand knowledge of this. granted it was a mobile home we got to shoot up, it went thru two walls. i keep #2 birdshot, nitrosteel,3'' mag.

edit: i did keep 3 1/2" 00buckshot in it, til i saw that. 18 pellets @ that range would be nasty, and even MORE dangerous to my children or neighbors.
I keep mine loaded with #4 BUCKSHOT, not birdshot. Its .22 caliber and will be plenty effective at indoor ranges. Remember that no round is considered safe when being used indoors around other occupants.

I keep shotgun shells. I tried other rounds and they just dropped out the barrel.

Seriously, #4 buck is always a good option.

.223 rounds won't work?
#4 buckshot followed by 2 slugs
yea i know slugs go through walls but the set up of my house that isnt much a concern.
I normally have #4 heavy Duck Load.....my last shell is a 00 Buck, just for backup.

Really I think that would be a question best answered by an examination of your home and neighborhood.

If I were at home, in the middle of nowhere, I'd say anything goes. Here, in BR? I'd stay with the birdshot in a 3 1/2" mag or 3".
Maybe I should take the slugs out...may be over kill and hazardous to my neighbors...

Only thing else I have in the house is 7.5 bird shot...

Slugs or 7.5 bird shot???
6 rounds of Hornady TAP 00 Buck.
This article might help.....

I always keep 00 buck shot in mine. I realize that might not be an option, but be careful with bird shot.

I keep heavy field load which is #7.5.

The scattergun is just to let em know whats up anyway...I keep my handgun bedside as well, so if they still coming after 5 rounds of heavy field has come their way, then it will be time to grab the 9.

I think of it this way. I don't engage in any activities where i worry that someone is going to come in where the intent is ONLY to cause harm. I assume any home intruder is going to be random B&E robbery. I'm also assuming that the average random home invasion robbery perp isn't going to stick around after being shot by ANY size round from a shotgun.

Is that too many ASSumptions? Maybe, but they are assumptions i'm willing to make.

That's me as well...for now...I'll stick with the birdshot.

I can't read that article here at work, so I'll take a look once i get home.
I use Fiocchi nickel-plated low recoil 00 buck. I like the large pellets of 00 buck, coupled with the nickel plating which resists deformation and aids in penetration. The recoil is a LOT less than Remington Express, Wolf 00 buck, Fiocchi standard buck, Rem/Win turkey loads, etc. It's also very cheap, very clean and very reliable. It destroys silhouettes at the range, too.

I like it so much I just bought 10 boxes (100 rounds).

ETA - they call it "Reduced Recoil" for anyone looking to buy.
Also, I always promote ammunitiontogo.com when I buy ammo. I've bought a lot of this lately to stock up while it was cheap. I think they have great service. I've ordered over 150 rounds from them in the past month to stock up.

got a charles daily 12 gauge in the bed room...1 round is plastic chaff then the 00 buck shot and last but not least a slug, if i ever get that far I'm going to be remodeling the whole inside of the house
If you expect to be attacked by birds, use birdshot.

Otherwise, 00 or #1 buck.

Hit your target center mass within 10 yards and all pellets will be in BG.

thats a good plan, hope you can control your adrenaline. and panic.

Is your house made of brick? If so, it may be double layer brick. Two of the houses we had in Lubbock were double layered brick. A slug may go through, but not likely into your neighbors house. I could be wrong as I have never tested it. But I use 9 pellet 00 buckshot in mine.
