what 12 guage round to use for bear defense?
well i live in idaho and go up to the mountains quite a bit and go camping and backpacking i also wonder around to take pics in places that i havent been before and have ran across a couple bears in my time.
well i have a mossberg 12 guage with a 14\" barrel AOW so i cant have a stock on it, im stuck with the pistol grip (which hurts like hell to shoot with full power loads.)
well my question is what kind of ammo should i load it with?
i can fit 4 3\" shells and 2 2 3/4 shells and thats counting one 3\" in the chamber
but my question is what kind of shot?
should i load a couple slugs and then buck shot
should i have one turkey load or bird shot so i can either shoot a snake or use that to try and blind the bear my shooting him in the face (personally i dont think shooting a bear with bird shot would be a good idea

I know from first hand experience that Breneke slugs are excellent.

I think step one would be to get a shotty with a butt stock on it. Granted you may not have the time to properly shoulder a shotgun if an attack occurs, I'd certainly like the option...last thing I want is to have a bear coming at me, and me shooting from the hip.

I'll second the 'slugs only' recommendation and I wouldn't dick around with 'low recoil, tactical' or any other watered down crap. Use Winchester or Federal 2 3/4 inch (1600 fps load) and stuff as many as you can get in the tube w/o binding it up. They might hurt to shoot but they'll hurt a whole lot less than having a bear bite your ass off.

If that was my only option I would carry full power slugs. No matter how much it hurts your little wrists to shoot, that would still be better than being eaten by a bear.

Not a good idea. Buck shot may work on a smaller black bear but not on brown bear. You need bone crushing penetration. Pretty much every leo department uses Breneke slugs in Alaska for that purpose and they work well. I had to shoot a charging bear recently and I am glad I had Brenekes.+1 yep stagger your loads. 00, slug, 00, slug.

you need to get a real shotgun with a stock and use full power slugs. If you try them with your shotgun you will be sorry and your second shot will probably be a miss.

I was going to get the Knoxx pistol grip for it but now that ive been shooting it for a while it doesnt hurt bad at all if you grip it one finger lower on the pistol gripand it allows the gun to rock back a little and it distributes the load better over you entire and instead of focusing it right between your index finger and thumb.
i went shooting with a friend who is much stronger then i am and will usually make fun of me when ever i get hurt and call me a pussy or what ever. well i was shooting my shotgun with my modified grip and he was doing it the regular way and he wussed out after only 5 shots and i shot at least 25
Are there lots of grizzlies in Idaho?
