It's also an economic decision on their part. Guns, ammo, and accessories are the only consumer good sector that is showing a steady rise in sales even in this bad economy. Here's a good article on the general trend and why the author thinks gun sales are doing so well and he also mentions the reversal by Wal-Mart: Consumers and Investors Seek Protection with Gold and Guns

here in AZ it depends on the walmart, most don't but a few do
All the Walmarts I've been in in WV sell guns, and by far have the best ammo prices. I did buy a SW stainless 9mm at a walmart in 93. Wife worked there and on employee night (30% off) I picked up a special order that someone had put $100 down and never came back so I got the $600 gun for about $300...soon after that they stopped selling handguns.
