Blackhawk Knoxx stock is the way to go. The recoil reducing one is well worth the money and you can add on the power pak for it and you will get 5 rounds of storage and other stuff. I have one and it works great.

As for other upgrades the only other thing I can suggest, because it's a home defence gun, is getting a light for it. I just got the Streamlight TLR-1s and it is awesome and very bright.
I have a KNOXX too. Check out blackhawk.com
Pistol-grip type stocks don't work very well on Mossberg shotguns because of the placment of the safety (on top of the receiver). In order to deactivate the safety, you have to remove one of your hands from the gun. Now, you can run with the safety off, but you have to be VERY good about keeping that finger out of the trigger guard unless you're ready to shoot.
I have the blackhawk (knox) spec ops on my 500. really like it, very comfy and the recoil reduction works well, takes it down to approx the same as my benelli m1 except for 3" then the semi-auto sucks up the recoil better.

but hoox is right about the safety, pistol grip stocks do make it difficult to access the safety on the 500.
Blackhawk makes a trdaitional style stock with spring recoil reduction too.

CompStock Shotgun Stock - BLACKHAWK!
thanks guys, sorry i havent been on in a while, but i never thought about the problem with the saftey, but i guess since it takes removing your hand from the grip(could just do it with left) i would be totally concious about putting the gun in rock and roll condition, something i feel can be good and bad
That's how I keep mine. Safety off, chamber empty. There are many opinions on this matter and that is just how I view it. BTW I have never seen it as a problem with having to adjust your hand quickly for the safety. The only complaints I have with the Knoxx Stock is that the action release is kind of hard to get at due to the thickness of the grip, but thats it.

I keep mine the same way. all though I'm sure I'll catch hell from somebody on here; I'm not one to use the safety on a shotgun unless hunting with other people. my 500 is a HD gun anyway, the m1 is my hunting gun and I find the cross bolt is much more convenient with any stock.
first. Take the winchester bulk bird shot out of the stock and load it with some buck shot..
2nd. If you think you need a PG stock, go with the Knoxx or the speed feed with a shortened LOP.
2nd part two. order a maverick trigger group to go with your PG stock. this put a trigger guard cross bar safety that is easier to reach than the tang mounted safety on a mossberg.
dang dude called me out on the bird shot:mrgreen:, i was shooting snakes i swear, haha yea i get cheat with my ammo, i was just shooting around when i figured the gun just didnt feel right. but whats the BEST HD buck shot in your op?

nothing wrong with bird shot. its affordable practice.
some people like the 8 count 00 Federal flight control.
some people like the 12 count 00 buck (I think they are from federal also)
For home defense, I think 3" is more than is required.
As far as size, 00 buck is the most available however, #1 Buck shot gives you the most total cross section. #4 buck is getting a little on the small size, but is adequate.
Pattern a couple brands, at home defense range, your not gonna see much difference. get a couple boxes of good 00 and shoot a few. If you find some #1 Buck, try them out.
