Trap question

1951 Views 6 Replies 1 Participant Last post by  ShotgunPro
Ok I do not know much about shooting trap but it was fun 8 years ago when I went with a buddy. I want to try it again but have no clue what type of ammo to use. And Google was not bringing up anything useful that was in terms I could understand.

What kind of shotgun ammo should I be using and can I buy it somewhere like walmart? I will be using a 12g Ithaca pump. Thanks for the help.

When I shoot trap I use win. aa low recoil, less stress on my body when I blow through 2 cases in a session. If you want a cheap place to shoot there is a free range down at desplains conservation area. You just have to bring your own trap and targets. Cabelas has some nice cheap do-all traps for under 100. Targets are about 12 per 135 count

Ok sweet thanks. I found some cheap clays at farm and fleet off rt. 30 in Oswego. Just going to buy a cheap hand thrower for now.

You are in my area. Where is a good place to pick this up, Win. AA? I prefer not to go to Mega sports. 59 is the only road from here and construction is a bitch. Been bad for couple years now I think. I only go there for guns.
I get it by the case at cabelas but gander or dicks may have it. I usually go with #7 or#8 shot size. Last time I got it price was around 100 per case. With the hand thrower try it a few time to see where the clay will go. They can be a pain sometimes we use it when we do triples since the trap will only do doubles. If we go again ill send you a pm and we can get a group together

Free ranges are getting less and less common. Enjoy it while you can and hope that fools don't abuse privs and ruin it for the rest of us!
I usually just buy the cheap remington or winchester brick of 100. I can usually find it on sale for like $20 at Farm&Fleet. Shooting trap theres really no wrong load as long as you stay cheap and dont buy buckshot. ;)

also, stick with the hand throwers. theyre alot more fun than the Do-All trap throwers. I bought a Do-All to "upgrade", and i never use it anymore. You only get one trajectory. With hand throwers you can throw them wherever you want. Makes for better real life wingshooting practice than just pointing ure shotgun at a fixed point and waiting for the clay to reach it....

you should come shoot with us then, i have the do-all with the swivel head on it. allows me to throw the target anywhere in the sky without the use of tools for adjusting. one may be low to the ground and the next one i throw will be almost straight up in the air lol we have never been bored with it lol
