My dream gun is the ALMIGHTY 590a1.. but until that happens, and for a 1st shotgun and with this whole Mayan prophecy(this is the excuse to justify this purchase to my wife) coming in december I figured I need to get at least 1 shotty before all that "happens".

WHen I saw that this is only $180, I was all set to get it..

Academy - Mossberg® Maverick® 88 12 Gauge All-Purpose Pump-Action Shotgun $180

BUT then I saw this..

Academy - Mossberg® Maverick® 88™ 12 Gauge Pump-Action Shotgun $190

shoot boy.. NOW I'm all like WHY NOT jus get both?

THing is do I really need both? At $370 for both, its still a H#LL of a lot cheaper then the $500 the 590a1 commands......

Again going with the whole Mayan Prophecy thing, I mainly WANT this for HOME DEFENSE< end of the world type ish...

BUT with that being said I did just pass my HUNTERS SAFETY course and and NOW legal to go deer hunting.. but I don't own a shotgun..

so wouldn't the Maverick Field model cover me there? RIGHT??????????

THe 2nd link, the 88 security 6 shot would hold me over on the home defense angle..

WHAT DO YALL think? Or am I going about this the wrong way?

The 590a1 is the dream gun and as such I don't think I should quite get that yet. particularly as my 1st shotty...

PLUS the other 2 TOGETHER are a steal and I can those TODAY.. while the 590a1 would have to be a special order.. probably online!

let me know!

If I needed to go hunting, the Field version is all I would need right? Thats the purpose of the enormously long barrel correct?

I just want to make sure that its usable for hunting i.e the pump is more suited for home defense (2nd link) and could never be used for hunting..

let me know!

hunting is the next beast I want to explore...

thanks again!

hehe I gave up on the pawn shop when I saw the ruger 22 USED sellin for $300 and it looked stock, OEM..

I'm on a vacation now(which is whats finally giving me the time to do all this) originally from WI visiting down in good OL' TX..

I was talking to my friend of a friend who basically said he would give me a shotgun for free pretty much...

Long story short, says he bought it for his wife and after she ONLY went hunting once its been sitting in the corner closet for a 2-3 years now..

I offered him some $$ but he said no, basically said that I should come back down in November and go hunting with him and maybe treat him out to eat a couple of times if I really REALLY wanted to..

IS THIS LEGAL? Am I able to take/accept this gun, I mean without repurcussions?

Is there anything special we would need to do?

Again I'm from WI, they are in TX.. so I am not exactly sure how all that works?

any input is appreciated!!

Would love to "accept" this shotgun and that would take care of my shotgun need I think.. but at the same time, NOT trying to do anything that would jeapardize my ability to legally own firearms!!

let me know!

p.s. He says its a Pardner shotgun, so yeah no "free" mossy for me...

Pardner Pump Security model is $179 at walmart. Very well built remington 870 clone, better made than the $347 Remington 870 express sitting next to it in the case at Walmart. All 870 parts fit except the barrel. To me it feels more solid with a better action than the maverick 88 . I used to have a maverick 88 20" 8-round.

I beg to disagree. 870 > M88. Despite the price tag, a maverick is not superior to a Remington shotgun. Nothing will make it so.

Depends on what you are hunting. The pump is just as suitable for home defense as hunting. The field barrel can be used for fowl and rabbit alike, but so can a Hastings barrel for an 870, smooth bore or rifled and used as for HD as well.

I can't imagine why (to save money) you would buy two of the same shotguns. How about just buy the Mossberg?
Mossberg 50521 500SP 12 18 6SH CB PGK PRK $280.00 SHIPS FREE

I do like my 18.5" 590A1. But even with the ghost ring sights, it was $430 shipped.

Mossbergs and Mavricks are very modular. Buy one with a 18.5 smooth bore barrel with bead or rifle sights, and then buy your other barrel for hunting. But you take the barrel off for even a simple field strip and it only takes about 20 seconds to fully switch barrels, and it's too easy.

But "pawn shop" in metro areas is usually a gunstore with a few other things. They usually charge used-retail prices. Look for the pawn shops with a low % of firearms. Around here it's easy to find a roughed up Mossy 500A with wood for only $100-150.

Either way, I'd just figure on getting one. The money then goes to originally buying a better one or buying mroe rounds for more practice. At Wally (not my source) the shelf #8 bulk packs are the same price as the #6 shot behind the counter. I buy the heaviest shot I can for the $5 price as training ammo. (Habbit developed from feeding an S12.)

I'm pretty sure the universe is supposed to align and we're going to float out into space, so I don't think a shotgun is going to help much there, unless you plan to use them as anchors.

BUT, if you're going to buy one, the maverick with the 20 inch barrel and full length mag tube would probably be my pick of the two.

The 590 just has a different (thicker) barrel, and metal trigger assembly are the main differences between the 500 and 590.

The forend is also a little different on the maverick, so some aftermarket accy's don't work on them too easily.

If you're planning on using slugs through it for hunting or defense, just check the guns you're interested in to make sure they're a cylinder or open choke and you should be golden.

For $130 more to get into your "dream gun" I think just pay the money vs. getting two mediocre shotguns.

However contemplate this for a moment.

The 590a1 uses the extra thick barrels which means its not compatible with normal 500/590 barrels due to the receiver being cut a little differently(or so I have been told as to the reason a 590a1 receiver wont accept 500/590 barrels and only a1 barrels).

I bought a 590 Special Purpose from Sports Authority for $420 or so. 20" barrel, 8 shot magazine tube, ghost ring sights. It doesnt have the metal trigger guard(from what I read nobody has actually destroyed a plastic one without actually trying to destroy it) and doesnt have the extra thick barrel. You can swap a metal trigger guard in if you REALLY want one. And I can use my receiver with regular 500 barrels if I wanted to get a 30" or whatever for hunting and clay games use. For me it was a great compromise as I too wanted an A1, but then read up on the differences and what you could and could not do with it and decided a regular 590 would work better for me.

I have 2 Maverick`s and have never had a problem with them. And you can swap out the barrels with the 500 series. They interchange. I have a 870 Rem also, never had a problem with that either. Your money, your choice. That`s my input. I like owning lots of guns. Some only want 4 or 5 or less. Me, I`m an gun addict and need rehab LOL. Anyway, choose and enjoy.
