Shotgun Purchase

I bought a XDM40 about 2 1/2 months ago and since then i've put about 2500 rounds through it without a problem. I've caught the gun-bug and now I'm interested in purchasing a home defense and range shotgun, but I have very little experience.

I've dug thru Remington's & Mossberg's website now to no avail. Looking for something similar to the Saiga 12ga, in terms of being semi-automatic, external mag(if possible). And with room for upgrades/improvements, foregrip replacement, folding stock etc.. Is there any particular shotgun you guys would reccommend to someone just getting into shotguns? I'm trying to spend less then $600.

Thanks in Advance.

You can get a nice Mossberg 500 series for 200. A well accessorized version (heat shield, strap, shell holder, pistol grip, shorty barrel) for under $300.
If you want semi-auto, Saiga's about the only choice for a high-cap semi under $600... and you may not even be able to find them for under that anymore.

As far as removable magazine, that limits it even more to the Saiga... I'm not even sure I can think of any other 12 ga. removable mag weapons.

Most people will recommend the Mossberg 590 or Remington 870 pump guns for home defense. Pumps are reliable as hell, and you will find them with extended capacity pretty frequently at ~$250-$350. Sink the rest of your $600 into a recoil absorbing tactical stock and you're golden.
Ahh thank you for the input so far, I wasn't aware that the Saiga features were that uncommon among other shotgun manufacturers. Pump would be preferred over lever action.
NDB_MN summed it up pretty well. To my knowledge you are limited to the Saiga. If you choose to go the pump route, I have an 870 and love it. Very versatile.

Would you happen to have any pics of it?

I'm leaning more towards Remington then Mossberg.
If you have the money get the Remington. Somewhat better gun (the police magnums are quite nice), A LOT more accessories, and easier to find all those accessories.

But for $200 you can't beat a Mossy 500...
home defense...

watch for 870 first if in a hurry, nothing wrong with a 500. I have both, one "looks" better than the other, they both are dependable for my use.
the remington 1100, and 1187 are both semi auto ... but the due not have external magizines ... they are tube fed as pumps are.... but certain models like the tac4 and competition master hold i believe 9 shots... maybe 8 im not sure... and as far as aftermarket add ons.. both have many many mods that will make it just about whatever you want... you can find both these models used for well under 6bills ...

I'll see if I can get some up tonight.
if you drop the removable magazine requirement you get more choices
Go Saiga if you feel you absolutely need the detachable mags. Alternatively your only other choice is to find a discontinued Knox Sidewinder kit that modifies a Mossberg 500 for 6 round magazines and 10 round drums. They go for around 650 bucks though nowadays and make your shotgun a lot heavier (though it does help with recoil). I got mine years ago and it is cool and different, but if I had it all to do over again I would have the Saiga. Just spend the money, you will make more.
No detachable mag, but I really enjoy my Mossberg 930 spx. Semi-auto and yes Mossberg has finally figured them out. Lovely shooter.

Do not fall for the Remington is better crap! They are both exelent guns.
bought remmy 870 express synthetic for $330 at a local sporting store
Having just rebuilt my Mossy 500, If I was starting from scratch I would go Remington 870. More accessories available and are easier to get then Mossy parts.
