Remington sportsman 48

I was given the above shotgun recently. It was not in very good shape. I cleaned it up , refinished the wood and it looks pretty good now. But after putting it back together I noticed that when I have the butt on the ground I can push the barrel down with my hand into the receiver. Is this normal?

Yes.
The 11-48 and Sportsman 48 are modernized versions of the Model 11 Browning type recoil operated shotgun. The barrel recoils and forces the bolt backwards.
