Remington 870 or Mossberg 500/590?

I'm looking into buying a new shotgun. I've narrowed it down to the Remington 870, or a Mossberg 500/590. It's primary role will be home defense, but I plan on getting a second barrel for hunting.

I've done some research, and the only real difference I've found between the two are ergonomics. Does anyone know anything that will persuade me to one side or the other?

I just picked up a NEF pardner Pump Protector. Clone of the 870, but half price, all parts are interchangable except barrel
oooh, maybe ill pick up one of those nefs
I bought a Mossberg 590 for home defense, but I have no intention of using it for hunting. That's what my Browning BPS is for...

One thing that sometimes persuades people toward one or the other is that the 870 has a steel receiver and the Mossbergs have aluminum receivers.
I just picked up an 870 Tactical over the weekend, I put a couple of boxes through it. Shoots very nice, you can see pics in my thread. I have another 870 as well, no problems at all, I'm a fan obviously.
One other big difference between the two is the location of their safeties. Go handle each one and see what you like better. Both are fine choices, it's usually just a matter of personal preference.
If you ever have someone in your family that is a lefty, a Mossberg will be better. Just because you can switch from "safety" to "Fire" with your thumb instead of your fingers. If your a lefty (like me) the 870 will be harder and you have to reach under to get to the safety switch, which is enough time to miss a oppertunity to fire. I have two 870, both for hunting, but HD I have a M500 for just that reason. M500 replacement barrels are almost twice less expensive then 870 too. So, its your decision and which ever one fits you best.

Performance-wise? Their both the same for me.
Ten million 870 owners can't be wrong.

If 10 million people jumped off a bridge, would you?

LOL, I was going to say the same thing.

Numbers doesnt prove anything. If that was the case, ~37,000,000 Mosin Nagants were made...you should get that instead of a 870. More were made. ;)
You can get a combo Mossy 500 that includes both an 18.5" barrel for HD and a 28" for other activities.

I have 5 or 6 870's and 1 Mossberg 590. The 590 is a tough, heavy duty gun. But I will always prefer the 870. The action seems a lot smoother to me.

5 or 6?! You should add a Browning BPS to that collection...

You need some diversity ;)
i read somewhere the mossy's have an aluminum receiver, and the remi's have a steel receiver. some would argue the aluminum is weaker and thus may be prone to having issues if exposed to heavy usage.

thats 1 reason why mossy's are so much cheaper than remi's, so ive been told.

having said that, i purchased a mossy 500 for hd, i knew it wasnt going to get rode hard and put away wet, so i wasnt concerned with that. i decided to save the money. and so far, i have not had 1 issue with it.
+1 for the 870...highly recommend it!
Mossy 500 with breacher barrel. + I have a medium choke bird barrel too.

It's funny, the looks I get, when I arrive at the blind with a collapsible 6 position stock M4 stock (with but pad and pistol grip), a medium choke 28" barrel. With a Hiviz green filament style sight.

870/500=ford/chevy.

same thing, different name. not huge differences. its really just personal preference. ive got 2 500's and currently a friends 870 in my safe. i like the 870's trigger bypass but in every other way the mossberg does it for me.

they are both very good guns, super reliable, cant go wrong with either.. check out both and see which one fits you better.

the 590 though is a bada$$. but i think remington has some other higher end shotguns too.

I've heard that theoretical argument, but I haven't seen it in practice.

I have a Mossberg 835 that I've owned for about 14 years. I bought an 870 a couple years ago because I didn't have one yet, and because it was a good price. The 835 is what I shoot. I've had the 870 out a couple times, but it doesn't point like the mossberg. I have a scoped barrel and shot barrel for the 835. I've put a couple thousand rounds of game loads through it, and a couple hundred deer slugs, turkey loads, and goose loads.

Amen. I am a lefty and that is why I use the Mossberg
When I got my 590 I was planning on getting an 870. After handling the 590 that was pretty much it. I just didn't like the feel of the 870 and I used one for years an LEO.

I don't think the steel/aluminum argument holds for the 590. The 590 is the milspec issue.
