Hello, I purchased a number of years ago and just haven't been able to decipher this shotgun. Its deeply engraved, and nickel plated over. Has someones name in a panel on Right side of frame, as well as a "P.V." over a downward arrow. I am assuming it was a custom engraving? serial # is an OM over 157xx. Gold trigger, safety, cartridge stop. Barrel address has says Browning Auto 5, Special steel 12g 23/4"-30, Browning Patents.
Although the P.V is a known proof mark, it seems odd the engraver would engrave it into the receiver and with the addition of the arrow...
Has round recoil spring.
Any input would be appreciated.

I am not sure actually? Was hoping someone might have some ideas?
Most curious where is the serial # located on the bottom of the receiver ?.

Early in MY life I was privileged to have personally seen a Model of Every Browning produced as well as some prototypes, which Weren't produced .
Those weapons had single - three digit serial #'s on them . And how was this possible ? , I was Friends with John Mosses Browning's Daughter's Husband . Every living member of the Browning family was issued based upon seniority, 1 St. run production firearms in sequential serial #'s .

Your serial # dates 1905 , Yet OM ISN'T even a consideration or corresponds in any way shape or form to the Browning /FN Serial # . As and Auto 5 serial # is ONLY on the bottom of the receiver and FN Belgium began manufacture in 1903 , Your Auto 5 should have a circle with FN inside it . Later models after WWl and before WWll have Scroll or Script FN .
1940-46 Remington monkey screwed serial and letter serial #'s as they had production . Either in1952 or 56 serial # letter designation changed again and again over the course of production ,including 1994 beginning Japan production .

M=standard weight and wasn't factored in until 1957 I believe

These were the grades available :

11 A - Standard Grade

11 R - Riot Special
11 P - Police Special
11 B - Special Grade
11 C - Trap Grade
11 D - Tournament Grade
11 E - Expert Grade
11 F - Premier Grade

FYI ; I also own several Browning firearms :)
