Finally got a chance to shoot my new Remmy 870! While it was really fun, I was getting really frustrated with shells getting stuck in the chamber!!! I was shooting Wally world Winchester (100 shells for $20) el cheapo's though it. I'm HOPING that this was the reason they were getting stuck. The last shell that got stuck was IN THERE! It took both hands to work the pump to get the stupid thing out! I noticed that the shells have a small narrow metal lip, versus what I am used to seeing - a wider brass one.

This is my first pump, so any advice (other than to never buy that cheap ammo again - lesson learned) is greatly appreciated!

In fact, I just got my gun back from Remington yesterday. This is the second time I have sent it in, and I won't be back out to the range until tomorrow to see if they have corrected the problem or not. Belive me, you are not the only one having this problem and it is extremely frustrating. You should be able to remedy the problem by buying the high brass shells. HOWEVER, if you are anything like me, you know that the 870 should be able to chew up and spit out ANYTHING you put in it. If you want to be able to use the cheap ammo in the 870 (like you should be able too), send it back to Remi. Make them correct the problem. Subscribe to my thread, and i'll let you know if my problem has been solved.

my 870 used to do this, the low brass expands and gets stuck. You can have a gunsmith polish the chamber and that should take care of it

My 870 does this only with the Winchester shells. I just quit buying them and get Federal or Remington. I've never had a problem with any other brand, only the Winchesters from Walmart.

I had problems with shells getting stuck in the magazine. It only happened with Winchester high brass for some reason. It was stuck so bad that each time it happened I'd have to take the gun apart and use a dowel rod to punch the shell out.

Polish the chamber yourself. It's easy and takes about 10 minutes total. You only have to smooth out the area that comes in contact with the brass head of the shell when expanding. I used a drill with a shotgun cleaning mop wrapped in fine steel wool and soaked in oil. Then I hit it again with just a cleaning mop soaked in oil. It will feed everything now.

Get some fine steel wool or some scotch brite (i used scotch brite).
Put some CLP in the chamber then start scrubbing.
Keep scrubbing for about 10 minutes.
Take a brass bore brush and go in and out for a few minutes.
Scotch brite again.
Clean barrel.
Go shoot, and enjoy.

I used this method myself, then went and shot the cheapest stuff i could find.
It was only happening with Winchester aluminum low cases, but after "polished" the chamber it ate that stuff up just fine.

This is MUCH easier than fighting with Remington and shipping your gun.

Mine does the same thing, along with a guy I know who has the same issue. I have only shot maybe 100 shells through mine with it being hard to shuck a few times. I think once the shot gun is broke in it may not be as bad. Do I think it needs to go back to Remington...no would it be my first choice in a bad situation...dunno.

How old is your 870? I'm going to say if it's 20 years older (or close), then pretty much all of those chewed up anything without a hitch. If it's more recent. Then concider yourself one of the lucky FEW that picked one up... Mine seems to be operating just fine after I polished the chamber myself, but it was a nightmare having to get it to this point.

My tactical 870 used to do this (only with Winchester white box) when I was breaking it in it. And sometimes it does it's now (only when it's really needing cleaning) again only with white box, because I recently had my smith strip the finish and durocoat the whole thing.... Long story. Anyway it's a common thing to deal with. Just clean and oil everything well, maybe polish up the cylinder, and run some different shells thru it for a while. It'll correct it's self over time. No need to send your gun off. Just my experience

I'm bookmarking this thread for future reference. It will he handy to toss out a link to it when someone states one must have a pump gun for HD since they are so much more reliable than a semi-auto.

That being said, one does seem to see a lot of issues posted up concerning the Win 100 round boxes sold at Walmart.

Mine is only a year old el cheapo Express. I've done nothing to it that would affect extraction or ejection. I keep her clean and that's about it.

My 870 I bought several years back did this as well. Seems like a very common problem with 870s these days with the cheap walmart ammo. I polished the chamber and the problem is gone.

Yeah I've probably cycled only about 30 or so of the cheap winchester target loads in question. No problems. I usually shoot 2 3/4 00 Buck or slugs, however.

I run the WWB Wally World el-cheapo ammo through my 870P MAX and never had a problem. Then again a $1500 shotgun should shoot anything you put in it.

My other home Defence weapon. The shotgun is his back up.
