Hello people,

I'm new to this forum and I really like it. I just wanted to ask a quick question about my Mossberg. I just bought it from a buddy and it has the long barrel with the shells tube just as long as the barrel. I think it holds like 8 or 9 shells in the tube. Is it possible to buy a shorter barrel and shell tube? Or do i have to sell it and just buy a shorter version? Thanks in advance.. .

You can buy shorter barrels. Mossberg has them on their website. There's an 18 1/2" barrel for $80+. http://www.mossberg.com/products/access.asp?type=barrels&section=access

Yes, there are many barrel options and 99% are for use with 5-6rd capacity mag tubes.

Do you know which model # it is?

Typical stock Mossberg 500 is a 5-6rd mag, not 8-9.
Since there is not a way to add a mag extension to the 500 series, Mossberg sells a barrel especially for use with a extended mag tube.
I'd bet this is what you have, MOSSBERG 500 HIGH CAPACITY SHOTGUN KIT - Brownells
I am not sure I can see why you would want to change it. You could go with shorter stock???

Yeah, that High Capacity kit is exactly what I have. It's not bad, i just thought I would shorten it a bit. But now after really looking at the differences maybe I'll just keep it. What do you guys think?? ?

I like the strap and extra shells holder on the stock of your shorter one. Where can I find those?? ?

I would keep it, definitely keep it if this is primarily a Home Defense shotgun.
hell man, I am thinking about getting one of those for HD! Honestly, keep it and be happy. Supliment it with a shorter 18.5 inch barrel version that is 5+1. Honestly, you've got a great weapon, but make sure you put a stock on it. A 12 guage without a stock equals major wrist pain. With the Mossberg 500...I suggest sticking with the regular old monte carlo stock that comes from the factory...although Knoxx recoil reducing stocks are very intriguing. I do not own any of them, but am very curious about them....because hey...who doesn't enjoy shooting a shotgun without dislocating their shoulder.
i may be wrong but that looks like the 18.5" or maybe 20" barrel. if that is for HD i would leave it. if you want to shorten it up just get a pistol grip. what i would do, again, if it's for HD, is walk around your home with it and see how you're able to move around. my floor plan is pretty open so i'm comfortable with the stock on it. if i was in a small apartment i would most likely remove it.

jeepster, what is that gun on the right?
Remington 7615 pump .223 takes AR mags.
Thanks guys. I think im going to keep it. Its got a nasty scratch on the other side of the barrel. Has anyone ever tried to refinish a gun before? I saw the bluing kit at Gander for like $15.. .
The Duplicolor high-temp ceramic engine enamel is really good stuff, I used it on my Saigas to very good effect. It has withstood the test of time/use.
I use the krylon ultra flat on my Maverick. the heat hasn't bothered it. Ive not had to touch it up other than a complete repaint when I put my Knoxx stock on. I got a couple wear marks from the case I used.
Excellent, thanks for the ideas.. .

ultra flat brown with ultra flat khaki.
trigger assembly, pins, and my action bars are the only thing black.

if it's a blued finish, try using a bluing pen.

I don't see any point in refinishing a gun everytime it gets a knick or scratch. I call that kinda stuff character.

My 500 has more than it's fair share of dings, most are on the aluminum recieiver.

Great idea, I already added it to my cart on Amazon. I'm also looking into just removing the bluing and polishing the metal to look like bi-tone. I like that stainless and black look.. .
yeah, don't do that.

it'll rust in a day.

If you want that kind of finish, look into having it hard chromed.
