i bought a mossberg 500 brand new and supposedly the forend is that of a maverick 88?? how do i know for sure?? I took the barrel off and tried to figure out how to take off the forend but cant seem to figure it out.. I basically just wanna swap out the forend for a diff one but, dont know which one i need. The forend is also hitting my side saddle.
Ive researched but still cant seem to find the answer im looking for. Some say you have to buy the mossberg action slide tube in order to be able to swap out the forends?? I dont know why mossberg would put a maverick forend on a mossy 500 but i guess its possible being as its the same company. Im basically just lost.
I really just need to know what i need and or have? I WANT A NEW FOREND.

idk if the pics are working so let me know?
No images - try posting them at ImageShack, and posting them here instead of attaching them to the post...
Right click on pic, open up in new tab, and re-log in.

I see the interference with the side saddle. That can be fixed.

Check with Mossberg online for accessories and disassembly tips.
I called mossberg and they told me in order to swap out I have to buy the action slide with nut and new forend.. They said the new mossberg 500 uses the same forend ass the maverick 88. that doesn't make sense to me. Why would they do such a thing. On my 500 I don't think I can simply pull off the forend and buy a new one I think I need to purchase all I mentioned?
That is odd. Learned something new.
A maverick 88 is basically a cheaper mossberg 500. Parts are interchangeable.

See thats the thing everything is interchangeable except for the forend. According to what i understand from mossberg and my own research is that the 88 has like a dual action slide, where the mossberg has a single. So in order to swap the forend you have to buy what i mentioned above. All other parts should be interchangeable.

What i still dont get is i bought a brand new in box mossberg 500 and it came with the maverick 88 style forend and i dont get why. I think the lady at mossberg was trying to tell me that the new bass model mossberg 500 will be coming like that from here on out... If so that sucks!!
I have a Mossberg, my son has a Maverick. The Mossberg has two action slide bars, his Maverick has one. He bought it used so I don't know if someone else altered. Nevertheless, why would Mossberg have a Maverick forearm. If your action slide has two bars I'd be tempted to keep it as is. If you don't like that option, contact Mossberg again and press them. That is unless your looking for a different forearm all together.
the 500 has always had dual action bars. (this was always touted as one of the main features of the gun)

^^^actually that's not true, they had a single bar on the earliest models but everyone past 1970 has dual bars.

the earlier Mavericks had a single bar but have since been changed over since 1990 and on.

you can either just trim the grip or buy another one.

that's a longer foregrip on it.

you don't need to buy a whole new slide assembly...

That forgrip doesn't look like a Maverick's either, I believe they still use the corncob fore end.

Any foregrip for a 500 should work fine on it.

here's a nice video on tearing down the 500/590

actually, watching that video, the forearm on that gun is identical to yours.

it can be a little tricky getting some of the parts back together, but really, it's a pretty darn simple gun.

Other than the fact that the forearm grip (which you could easily trim) is hitting the side-saddle, why are you needing to swap?

They are doing it because its cheaper. Your action bars are molded into the plastic. simple injection mold process.

My maverick has dual action bar and a 7-1/2" slide tube. there is also an 8-3/4" I believe (or maybe its 6-3/4")

to the OP. checkout brownells or Natchez, they have the parts you need.

it seems the 500 and the maverick are pretty dynamic on their parts depending on availablity and possibly where you buy it.
That's a change I need to make note of...kinda lame on their part.
I bet you can find a whole new forend pretty cheap that has the nut on it so you can change it out. Check out any of your local gun shops. Small time guys. they usually know where to get this stuff and probably have on in the back somewhere.

Me personally I'd just trim the thing with my dremel.
