Maverick 88 vs Hawk 982

i wanted some opinions on these 2 shotguns. i am getting it for christmas and its my first shotgun.
Maverick 88
( 42628 - 12 Gauge Maverick Model 88 Security Pump Action Shotgun 3" Chamber 20" Barrel 8 Rounds Black Synthetic Stock Blued Barrel )
Hawk 982
( Interstate Arms Black Synthetic 12 Ga Defender w/18.5" Barre $198.00 SHIPS FREE )

this would mainly be a HD shotgun but with some interspersed clay shooting and deer hunting. probably wont shoot slugs past 100-150 yds.

maverick has 7+1 shot already. Hawk has 5+1 but i could get a 870 extension. i want a side saddle on my shotgun but maverick hits the shellholder and cant be exchanges with 500 forend. hawk takes all 870 parts but barrel( rumour is you can if you move the barrel ring. any ideas?) my budget is $200-$300 but would like some accesories as well. any thoughts are appreciated

Get the Maverick over the Chicom 870 clone.

^^^^ THIS!

A Maverick 88 is a fine weapon and has a great price point. I'm thinking of picking up another one just because they are so cheap!
It's hard to go wrong with the 88...I don't remember even one negative about them.

Mine has been USED and still a fine gun, and the crossbar safety is my favorite
My Maverick has been aweosme. I've had it for about 15 years. Only thing I wish I could find is an oversized safety, similar to the ones available for the Rem 870.

I have the 5+1 and it's light and fast. If I got another, the 7+1 might be my choice, even though it's 2" longer and heavier. Would be hard to decide!
Im a bit biased, because I own a Mav 88, but I would go with the Maverick 88 over new production Remmy 88.
yeah i am pretty much decided on the maverick 88. i would like to put a side saddle shell carrier on but the stock forend interferes. mossberg 500 forend doesnt fit without me getting the whole assembly. how hard would it be to trim the forend and how bad would it look? thanks
or going through my plans on accesorizing it a little i thought of going with the Knoxx specops NRS stock and maybe just getting the powerpack that has a cheek rest and shotshell carrier on it
I own a Maverick 88 and I love it...great gun for a great price

check on shotgunworld.com. there are people regularly looking to get rid of their maverick foreend for a mossberg 500 foreend.
There are also a few threads on where people have trimmed for clearance.
changing them isn't hard, just remove the detent pin to remove your trigger group, there is a carrier end there that connects the bolt to the fore arm rods. then the foreend slides out. You may also check brownelles or natchez for a maverick security model forend. they are smaller and have the action bars molded into the forend instead of riveted to the inner tube of the fore end.

I have been wanting/looking at these for a while, cant beat the price.

not bad at all. My only hiccup on it is its an 8 round. barrels are more limited if you decide to turn it into a field gun later. but then again, a maverick 88 field gun will cost you as much as a replacement barrel so you might as well just buy another gun.
tnscooter: that exactly the shotgun i am looking at but they were out of stock for awhile glad they got them back in stock! :D

frontier owner: so if i understand correctly if i get the security model then the forend wont interfere with the shell carrier
Who told you that the forend interferes with a sidesaddle? Maybe on the Walmart 88 with the blocky square forend but not the 20' 8 shot with the corn cob forend.
i read it on shotgun world. then again they never mentioned which model. now that i searched i see the difference in the forends. thanks for pointing that out. on a side note has anyone seen the new magpul art of the dynamic shotgun or another good shotgun instruction dvd? i dont have time or money for a full class.
Ya I think this is the one they were talking about.

there has been alot of discussion on shotgun world (mossberg section) on the mavericks and the 500's. Mossberg seems to swap between the "corn cob" forend with the action bars molded in to the full field fore arm. The hang up has been on the 6 shot models where mossberg seems to switch barrels depending on if they need field or security and which fore arm they have handy.
It seems that the security models most likely have the corn cob version. but its possible to have the field fore arm on them too.

Just have too look at the actual firearm your going get.
sounds about right. i even heard they are putting maverick 88 forends on mossberg 500s. thanks guys
I bought the mav 88 field and it has the larger fore arm on it. I wanted it as a field gun so Im happy with it like it is. My fore end comes back over the loading port about 1/2 way or so.
A buddy bought the mav 88 6 shot security and his has the corn cob fore arm. His fore arm stops at the front of the reciever (or just before)
these are the only two I can say for certain.
Here are a couple pics with the slide fully back.
