There are quite a few things you can do to modify the Maverick 88 - its essentially the same as the 500 and MOST parts are interchangeable. One thing that is not the same is the forestock, they are different lengths and the Maverick's forestock is riveted whereby you generally can't use aftermarket forestock's from a 500 kit (like BlackHawk for example). If you simply google Mossberg or Maverick you can generally find several mods. Heat shields are always a good idea if you plan to shoot recreationally as the barrell gets pretty hot - plus it adds a nice look and is easy to install. Heres mine with a couple of goodies added;

the receiver isn't drilled and tapped like the 500 either.

the field version of the mav 88 has a metal tube in the forearm, but its about an inch shorter than the 500. Some of the 500 tacticals have come out with the riveted forearm like the 88.

If you got the pistol grip only version, the first mod would be to put a real stock on it.
Get a good light, if you go cheap, the bulbs WILL fail in a couple shots. A buddy has more than his share of lights with broken bulbs in a draw.

Where's a good place to buy the 18.5" version??? Someone told me I could buy that gun at Wal-Mart for $180.00???
I would try one of the more sporting goods related stores (academy, dicks, etc). Walmart seems to only have the field version around here.
Then again, you could drop $180 for a field version, then drop another $80 on the 18.5" barrel and have both worlds.

I think you just summed up everything I want for the shotgun. Thank you. I got 18.5" security model, Academy has them for $189.99.

The Walmart version also has the bulky square fore grip. I prefer the corn cob one myself.
