At 30 I just got my first shotgun, my Dad just gave me his first shotgun, a 1964 Browning Sweet 16. I already want another shotgun and have no idea want I want or need. Whatever shotgun I get next I want it to be a pretty good one. I don't plan on hunting anything anytime soon so I really just need a shotgun for home defense and clay shooting. I don't know which one the Sweet 16 is best for but I assume I need a 12 gauge next. Since ammo for the Sweet 16 is pretty hard to find maybe the 12 gauge could be used for home defense and clay shooting?

I am really simple. If you want something reasonably priced and reliable get a Mossberg 500 Combo package (about $260 on sale at Big 5 in California). Comes with a 26" (28") barrel and 18.5 inch defense barrel. Easily interchange. I have two of them and they have been very reliable. I like pump better than auto. Also 12 gauge is the way to go. More and cheaper ammo. At 30 you should have no problem with the load. In addition, there is a ton of aftermarket stuff available for the Mossberg 500/590 series as well as the remington 870 - another great gun. Like I said I have a 500 and I have tricked that one out and also a 590 Secutiry model that is really tricked out - Blackhawk KNOXX anti recoil stock, heat shield, picatinny rail, hologram red dot sight, bayonet lug, tri mount forward light/laser mount forward. For the gun and all the toys I paid about $750 by buying on sale and scouting the internet. Red dot sight and stock added about $200 to the price, the other stuff was rather inexpensive.

Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 combo guns are both fantastic choices. Get a 12 gauge as you can find decent field use ammunition cheaper than most guns (except 20 ga.) and 12 is perfect for HD as well. The local wal-mart always has Remington shells for the 16ga. guns in where I live and I would still recommend shooting your Browning occasionally just for the fun of it. I've been dieing for Grandpa to pass down his stevens 311 16ga with the tannite stock but I doubt he ever will.

I would say you nailed that one pretty good! While I may be a bit biased due to owning one, I agree that the Mark 1 and the regular 18" SLP are both very nice semi-auto. After getting mine, my Benelli doesn't see much range time any more.

I just got a mark one and have quite enjoyed it. Even tried shooting skeet with it (I didn't do so well, but my range buddy broke clay after clay with my SLP! :-x)

The only shotgun I ever owned before this was an 870 Marine Magnum. (Stolen) which had a fixed cylinder bore. The SLP is threaded for choke tubes, about which I know but little. So now I'm choke obsessed. I need to not only pattern various types of ammo, but pattern various types of ammo with different degrees of choke!
Good thing I enjoy shooting...

+1 vote. I bought same combo at Big5 last year for $249. 12 gauge pump. Maybe not the absolute best for trap and skeet, but mine breaks clay just fine. Best for the money I think, especially because OP wants trap and HD gun. OP has a nice gun from his Dad, the 500 would be a good day to day gun so that the Browning stays nice.
