This is open to all, feel free to jump in and educate me on the subject. Was going through my hulls after Saturday at the club. I got to noticing the primers looking strange. After a good look see it appears I've got pierced primers. This is from my 725 28 ga. Bad primers, firing pin woes ?? Speak up ! ( RKB OneOunce )
What make of primers? A lot of folks have complained of pierced primers when using the Cheddite brand, but I have personally not had that happened to me, and I have used over 30K of them in 15-20 different shotguns. I have one gun that does occasionally pierce them, a JP Sauer 16ga sxs with external hammers, made in 1894 - but it pierces other brands also, its firing pins are on the long side.
I would look at the face of your firing pins, see if there is any pitting from escaping gas. Once the pins are scarred, the incidence of piercing may well increase. New pins for a 725 are not too expensive and Browning pins are not difficult to change.
Ok the primers are cheddite. That being said that is the only thing I can get. I will also look at firing pins. Thanks guys for the help, a big reason I enjoy this board.
I've used nothing but Cheddites for the last five years, no issues at all. Most of them have been through a Zoli, but I did buy 2 725's earlier this year, a 12ga and a 28ga. I bought spare firing pins for both the day I took them home...I heard the rumors.
So far I haven't needed them...
I've had some pierced primers using Cheddite's. Always the bottom barrel. I was told is has to due to the angle of the firing pin and that their cup material is a little softer/thinner. I know that Browning's are not known for firing pin issues, so I wouldn't really worry about it, but it might not be a bad idea to have a set of spares anyway.
Have a good critical magnified look at the business end of those firing pins. They need to be radiused smoothly and evenly, and nearly perfectly polished. Any minor imperfection will be transferred onto the soft metal of the primer cup, and any minute blemish or line on that cup is an invitation to a pierced primer. There is gunsmithing, and then there is shotgun gunsmithing.
