First of all hello all. I've been lurking for a while and finally joined. I have what maybe a completely idiotic question but I need some input. I recently acquired a 12ga Mossberg 500A. The gun is missing the safety. Not just the button but the whole kit. I plan on replacing it soon but I am wondering if it is safe to shoot without it? I don't keep the gun loaded nor do I plan to hunt with it before replacing the safety but I would like to fire it since I just got it. In my head it seems like a bad idea. Am I right in thinking so or just being overly cautious? Also has anyone had experience replacing the safety before? I've found the instructions and it seems easy enough as long as you take your time. Thanks for any help in advance!

Speaking only for myself, I would not try to fire the weapon knowing the safety system was missing.

Suppose you have an AD using the weapon:

Prosecutor: Mr. Gunowner, did you have prior knowledge the weapon's safety was defective?
Mr. Gunowner: Yes
Prosecutor: And having prior knowledge that the safety was defective, you placed live ammunition in the weapon?
Mr. Gunowner: Yes
Prosecutor: Your Honor, the People rest and ask for a directed verdict.

Sorry, I would not take the risk.

Thanks all. Pretty much echoing what I was already thinking but it's nice to hear it from others too. I appreciate you guys taking the time to answer. Bijou I like how you put it. It was funny to read but really drives the point home and not funny at all when you think about it. Thanks again guys.
