clay shooting help

5512 Views 23 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  bobski
I am interested in purchasing a White Wing clay thrower and a Tri Star Setter over/under in either 20 or 12 Ga.

Want to get into shooting clays, Don't know much about the difference between sporting clays, skeet and trap shooting.

Anyone with any experience with the two products I mentioned, and also some education for me on the different types of clay target shooting would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Donnie D :D

save your money and dont get a thrower for yourself.
it will just wear you out.
find a bonified skeet/trap range near you and ask them to teach you. and let their machine throw the birds!
make sure your gun has skeet or IC chokes in it for skeet.
full chokes for trap.
skeet crosses you in 8 different directions and 1/2 of them come at you. its a fast game.
trap comes out of a bunker and goes away from you in 3 different directions.
sporting clays imitates actual hunting situations and requires a lot of walking and is expensive.
typical skeet/trap round of 25 birds is 5.00 to 7.00.
use #9 shot for skeet and #7 1/2 shot for trap.
20ga kicks less but trap is a 12ga game.
i say go with a 12ga for universal game use.
hope this helps.
btw..how far you from the va. boarder? i shoot in the petersburg va area and would be honored to teach you.
click my link and say hi. mo is where i hang out twice a year when not in va.

dont miss the skeet/trap forums below on this website!
Thanks Bobski. I live about 25 miles from the Va line. This is the thrower I was looking at:

And this is the gun:

For now I'm just using my Pepper popper/pigeon flipper:

still it requires you to load it or a friend. and it doesnt really train you for the games.
what happens is you get use to where its going to go and its mostly away.
and it tires you out.
i was coaching a fellow on the internet just like you and the day he actually shot skeet...he got 2 out of 25, because those little traps he had dont throw as fast, and they flew where he wasnt ready for them.
follow my logic>?
those backyard throwers are playtoys.
but skeet is skeet. trap is trap.
how far are you from ft lee in petersburg?
I believe it's about 4 hours.

Donnie D :D
youre 1hr 50mins 95 miles from ft lee.
im 60 mins down in suffolk.
i'll drive to ft lee for ya.
if you want me to teach you one on one....let me know.
skeet and trap. nice friendly range on an army base. no crowds.
wed thru sun 10 to 4.
learn right the first time.
have a blast doing it too.
its the real deal.
straight up I-95.
bring ammo. need to borrow my gun? feel free.
let me know.

I guess it depends on what you want, I bought a nice white wing thrower and put it on a stand about 4 ft off the ground. It will sling the clays out 100yds or better. I usually get a few buddies with itchy fingers fill up the rack and let the clays fly. I have never ventured into the true sport, I just like to shoot.
backyard throwers are time passers for boredom.
actual skeet and trap as a sport requires much more prep, otherwise you get spanked at a local range.
since actual skeet and trap is a bonified social sport when played on a course (like golf), ettiqutte is essential.
buy a thrower load a gun and start shooting and im hear to tell ya, things can go wrong real fast since there are no firing lines and free muzzle swing.
way too many things can go wrong, thus i never encourage them.
i wont bother listing them all, but in a situation likethis, if there is a range, learn there, then bring your skill back to a thrower. not the other way around.
swamps of va....sounds like the hampton penninsula or south of suffolk!

Yeah, that's pretty much what I'm interested in. Just fun shooting. That's why I like the pepper popper, lot's of fun.

"Want to get into shooting clays, Don't know much about the difference between sporting clays, skeet and trap shooting.".................

ok, i see....
i thought you wanted to get into skeet and trap clay shooting.
but what you really want is to spend a few serious bucks on a gun and a thrower to make noise and break targets in your back yard for entertainment.

sorry. i was thinking you wanted the real deal.

with this knowledge...buy a cheaper gun and go enjoy. o&u's kick.
and by all means, go 20ga to save on recoil.

I`m still trying to say pepper popper pigeon thrower 3 times real fast. LOL
Pepper popper/pigeon flipper, pepper propper/plig pligon fipper, propper plopper ...... oh forget it. You're right. That IS hard to do.

Bobski, I do appreciate the info you gave me, I really do. I live in the sticks and am a member of a gun club here localy. My dues are 75 bucks a year, and that is all it costs me to shoot there, except for gas and ammo. We all just kind of pitch in whatever we want and kind of work together to keep the place up. It isn't anything fancy, but we have a place to shoot and sight in rifles and also have about 50 or more steel targets. I don't know of any skeep/trap ranges localy, and I'm just a fun shooter anyway.
Than you for your help and offer though.

my pleasure.

Wow. I'm a telephone service tech and I didn't know about this place. I had heard the name of the club, but I didn't know about the range. I'll try to find out what I can today. I'm sure I'll be in Harrellsville today as that is part of my area.
Thanks, and thanks for the link.

Donnie D :D
Thanks for the link Bobski. The place near me in Harrellsville is no longer in business, but a couple of the folks still shoot there, and one of them said I could shoot there with them sometime if I want. What I really would like to do is set up a place for clays at my clubs range. A few of the members have expressed interest, so I hope we can, even if it is only for fun shooting. Thanks again.
