Changing my Mossberg 500 barrel

Right now I have a 500A with the 20" barrel and what I assume to be an 8 shell tube (it comes all the way out to the end of the barrel). I am wanting to swap to an 18.5" barrel for better movement in my house but am wondering what I need to do about my shell tube? I couldn't find anyone who has changed out to a shorter shell tube but have read about people having 8 shell tubes on 18.5 barrels. What do I need to do?

That is why I have a regular 5 shot, 500 model as well. That is the one I use to hunt with and have a 18.5 barrel for. My 500a is a dedicated defence gun. There may be other barrels for the 500a Persuader, but I haven't seen any. Mossberg 500's are reletively inexpensive so I would not bother with changing the shot tube.

I don't really plan to do any hunting with this gun at all. I would have gotten an 18.5 had it been available as the sole purpose was for home defense. Looks like there's nothing that I can do to put a shorter magazine on it? I've seen a couple people say they bought new mags and swapped them out. One said he got it from Brownell's but I can't find anything on there about it?
Well I really think that you are over thinking this. 1.5inches isnt going to change much of anything. Just buy an ar type stock and you can shorten the gun more than 1.5inches. If you were close to Montana Id trade you my 18.5incher. Id rather have 7 +1. Anyways, i dont really think you can change the mag out, if you do, you have to get the barrel to fit the mag as well, like where the end cap screws the mag and barrel together. Anyways, good luck. I hope I helped in any way.

Ya I plan to get the Mesa Tactical adapter and use my spare ar grip and m4 stock until I get a MIAD and MOE setup for it. I just figured the 18.5 would make things that much better around the sharp corners.
Yeah, its only 1.5inches though. I dont think it would be a life or death thing. If it was, I doubt anyone would stand a chance either way.

Touche salesman. I think I'll just change to other plans for that money then.

HAHA, well I did sell Kirbys for a little while, but hated the hell out of it. I think that throwing on an AR stock you will be much happier with the extra shells and change the length all you want. I hate that I sold my 20in, wish I had that instead of my 18.5. I have an AR stock on my 18.5. Feels great. Its a cheaper one, the ATI stock. Good luck with whatever you do. Just seems to be less hassle keeping the 20in. Just my $.02

I think I am just going to put that barrel money towards a better stock instead. I am thinking about maybe a Magpul ACS stock instead of the MOE I had planned..

Sounds like a good plan dude. There are some really good stocks out there. I cant remember who makes it, but there is one that reduces recoil like crazy. Isnt the "Best" looking in my opinion, but doesnt have to be to work well.
^^^ It's the Blackhawk KNOXX stock. I had one on my 870 and it works. I even added a Limbsaver to it. You want to talk about recoil reduction? It was like shooting with a pillow!
The barrel you have is as short as it comes on that gun :)

I'd rather have the longer tube than an inch and a half of my barrel.
