I have a 870 express 12 guage, 28" ribbed barrel. It has the screw in choke at the end. Not sure what choke but it does have one. So to shoot a slug do I need to take out the choke or can I leave it in there?

thanks!

Edit: found out it has a Modified choke. And that I'll need an Improved choke to be able to shoot slugs.

We used improved choke on my girlfriends mossy 500 last year for slug season. Works pretty well, but getting a rifled barrel with some sabots put it to shame. So if you don't plan on shooting farther then say 50 to 60 yards youll be fine. If you don't have rifled sights then the accuracy can suffer.

DON'T shoot it without the choke!

DO NOT shoot without the choke screwed in, it can damage the threads in the barrel. I'd get a different barrel for it with rifle sights. At least check to make sure you have the proper choke, and change it if necessary. A slug does just barely fit down the smooth barrel for the mossberg, but the wadding under it is a bit tight. Dunno how accurate of a test that is, but I tried it out of curiosity.

Dont bother with the rifled bbl unless you are going to be hunting. I also wouldnt be too concerned with shooting a slug through anything but a full choke...do not shoot it through a full choke. Unscrew the choke and see what it says on it. You can buy indicidual rem chokes for cheap. But yeah...dont shoot it without.

I'd almost bet that the choke is Full.

the 28" barrel is made for bird and skeet.

go to a sporting good store and get a cylinder or improved choke tube.

on the slug and buckshot at 5yd debate, can someone with a chest 18" thick enven make it through your door???

hell, I'm 6'4", 290lbs and I can slide through an opening just under a foot.
