I bought this "Basket-Case" Mossy 500A a few years ago, from a co-worker who REALLY needed some cash in a hurry.....It sat behind the seat of his pickup truck for YEARS, it'd been "run hard and hung up wet", shot without the choke tubes installed...........He didn't have the original choke tube(s), but I knew I had a few in one of my junk drawers under my workbench at home.....So, for $50, this poor orphan came home with me......

It sat "unloved" under my workbench until earlier this year, when I finally got around to doing the full detail-strip, cleaning, lube-job, and re-assembly.....Luckily, shooting it without the choke tubes by the previous owner did NOT screw-up the internal barrel threads, and a spare Modfied Tube slid right in place.....Here's how she looks today:

A function check after re-assembly worked great....HOWEVER......

On it's first trip to the range, it seems to "fail to extract" most all rounds I tried; didn't matter if it was a light, low-brass target load, or a Turkey Load. When I re-assembled the bolt, I noticed that the twin extractors appeared to be a little worn, maybe even the springs were somewhat weak.....A few questions:

1. It IS possible, that I got the left and right extractors reversed.....would this situation cause the aforementioned failure to extract?

2. Where is a good source for replacement parts for this gun, other than Gun Parts/Numrich? Not that I don't want to buy parts from them, just want to know some other sources, if possible.....

I've been a S&W Revolver guy, and a Colt 1911 guy, for MANY years, with the subsequent acquisition of some Gunsmithing Skills, but I never had to tinker with the inner workings on most of my Scatterguns much, so I defer to some learned people on the diagnosis of this shotgun's ills....Any and all thoughts are appreciated, this will make a GREAT "Truck Gun", once I get the reliability back to 100%.....

I'm not a gunsmith nor do I play one on TV, but hang onto that Winchester box (must be 2 & 3/4" number 6 shot) those are collector items.
Besides yours and the one in my ammo locker I haven't seen one in years.

Havlin sales has almost everything for Mossberg shotguns. Havlin Sales & Service - Mossberg Gun Parts Most likely the springs are weak. I have a 500 that needs them replaced. I'm not sure that you can put them in backwards, but if you can that could possibly cause a problem. I do know they are different.

What did that gun look like before? It doesn't look like a basket case.

It was pretty rough, rusted barrel, no choke tube, lotta gunk in the reciever and trigger assembly.....

Thanks for the link, gonna get a set of Extractors and Springs, and see if that solves the problem.....
