MEC old bars

Most of my MEC charge bars are the old style without the capability of taking bushings. I've read that MEC recommends not using those bars as they're not accurate. My 7/8 shot bar accurately throws the same charge over and over without variation. Problem is it's not accurate. Using #8 shot, it's 12 pellets short every time. Probably doesn't mean much, but as I have the capability and time, does it make sense to ream it out till it consistently throws 7/8oz? I would not touch the powder side

First - welcome to the forum!
You could ream it out if you like, but if you change brands of shot and get slightly different sized shot, it will be off again. 12 pellets is nothing, just shoot it and enjoy it!

I'd have to see a posting from MEC somewhere that says they don't recommend using those bars as what you're seeing is normal.

The weight of the shot it drops is going to vary with the size of the shot no matter how you do it and no matter whether it's a fixed hole in the bar or a bushing.

And since 7/8 oz of #8 shot is nominally 356 pellets, why would you care about another 12?

If MEC said this, they have to be referring to the powder side of the bar and therefore would have nothing to do with the shot drop. All MEC bars drop light shot charges because we now use hardened shot. The metal added to the lead to harden it makes each pellet slightly lighter. But technically you should be dropping the correct number of pellets as if it was pure lead and weighted 7/8 oz.

If nominally the shot count is 356 and I get 294,is this significant?

Yes, but in your original post you said you were down 12.

I gotta say it, I've been reloading shotshells since 1969, 12 gauge, 20 gauge and 410 bore on an almost weekly basis and I've never even considered counting the shot.

I've gone back and weighed consecutive 5 charges.
-12grs
-15
-12
-12
-11

That's pretty consistent. That one charge last night must have been an anomaly. I didn't weigh it before the count.

Is one shot load pure lead and another with a high antimony count? Shot is dispensed by volume.....
