Stevens 311 Identification

I am confused by the stampings on my Stevens 311 and am trying to identify which 311 model it is (A, B, C..) From what I read...

You should find a date code stamped on every double-barrel shotgun in the Stevens brands, produced between March 1949 and December 1968.
Usually, it is behind the hinge pin or ahead of the trigger guard on the bottom of the frame.

It will appear as a small circle containing a number and a letter.
The letters correspond to the years shown in the following table.

A 1949 B 1950 C 1951 D 1952 E 1953 F 1954

Mine has two letters in circles an "A" and a "E"

I tried to post a picture but it doesn't show up, I'll look for a sticky on posting pics.

Seems you are looking for the number on what is called the water table ie. the flats on the frame under the barrels. Your circled numbers should be external (visible with the gun closed) on the frame right behind the hinge pin that the barrels rotate on, or on the bottom of the frame just ahead of the trigger guard loop. Hope this helps.

Stevens Markings

4575wcf thanks for the guidance to the number. It appears that I have an "A" made in 1949.

No problem, glad to help in some small way. That should be a very well built shotgun, from the time when Savage Stevens were building some of the best medium quality doubles available. Being in 16 gauge too, the best upland game gauge going IMO. If you don't reload, you should start, 16 gauge ammo offerings can be limiting. I have a Savage 99E rifle in .300 Savage made in about 1949 that was my father's. Walnut and blued steel, assembled in Chicopee Falls using mostly parts brought from the earlier Utica plant. You do not buy guns like these in this day and age.
