Model 37 Featherlight stock swap question

Hi everyone, I've recently gotten into collecting older shotguns and I'm hoping to find some knowledgeable folks here that can answer a few questions.

I want to swap the pistol grip stock on an Ithaca Model 37 Featherlight 12 gauge for an English style straight stock. The English stock slides onto the receiver but stops about 1/4" or less from mating properly. I suspect the issue is that the circled part of the receiver in the photo is just a little too long for the new stock. Can I just take a drill press and drill a slightly deeper hole in the stock?
