Who has hunted any of the big bears? Tell us about your hunt.

My dream hunt would be a brown bear in Alaska with archery gear I think. Although that's way out of my realistic price range.

Anyone hunt the big bears? Let's hear about it!

That's outside my staying alive zone! I'm too old to outrun everyone else!

No need to out run, just hit them in the knees with a big stick! 🤣

To know the future is to be trapped by it

I went on a Kodiak Island brown bear hunt back in the late 60's when I was working on RCA radar North of Mt McKinley. I had visions of an Africa hunt and had bought a Model 70 in 458 Mag. Buddy asked me to go along and be the last man in line watching the 6 o'clock position. In retrospect, I'm kinda glad the bears didn't see me either. It was a lot like being in a jungle at night with a machine gun. I had a really creepy feeling we were being watched. No shots, no bears. I didn't go a second time. Didn't make it to Africa either.

Almost any rifle with decent bullets outperfroms 12 ga slugs on bear, don't even think about buckshot. Black bear ain't hard to kill and are almost never aggressive. A handgun in 10mm, 357 or 44 mag would be a lot easier to carry around. Almost any 12 ga pump with a shorter slug barrel with sights would work, but of the long guns I own I'd probably use my 6 lb Marlin in 44 mag in case a wounded bear needed to be finished.

That is exactly why you carry a 44 mag. When you start to run, shoot your buddy in the foot!

I don't hunt yet but sure I must hunt in next year. I think you must be successful to do so.
Thanks

I was raised in Alaska and after seeing all the stuffed Grizzlies and Browns in stores and at friends' houses I pretty much decided to leave the bears alone.

Even a Marlin .45-70 loaded just below .458 Winchester Magnum velocities seems inadequate when you're walking through the Alders and come up on a steaming pile of bear scat.
