hunting Big Bears

This is a discussion on hunting Big Bears within the General Hunting and Conservation forums, part of the Hunting category; The 458 is just fine for that pile of scat; it might NOT be fine for the critter who made that pile though!...

I want to hunt one. A real big one preferably. But for now I need to focus on my metal detecting ventures. Maybe ones I save enough money for better hunting gear Ill try bear hunting.

My best friend went on a trophy hunt in 2018. He got a top 50 all time Alaska Moose, #21 all time Black Bear and an Award Class Grizzly. He shot a 9.3 X 62 for all of them.

I own that caliber, but will never be able to make a hunt like that. Besides, that 286 gr. bullet talks to me just a bit. I just installed a recoil pad on it (before I had it re-bored, it just had a White Line presentation pad).

I went bear hunting when I was stationed in Fairbanks. The local guide recommended the Marlin 45-70 which was one of the common big game rifles in the area. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to shoot it on the one hunt I went on, because none showed up. They must have all gone salmon fishing down in the SW area.

bear hunting

I have been on a few hunts for black bear. My first in 2000 hunting over bait I was able to bag a nice bear with my longbow, ash arrows and Nagnus 2 blade broadhead. In 2006 I hunted with an outfitter in New Mexico in the Gila wilderness area with hounds and bagged a better one with a Winchester 94 in 30-30.
Would love to hunt the bigger bears but don't have the funds available(like many) to do that
