Even though it's an old post, I always like to see what people would choose as their one gun. I sometimes think i'd be better off with only one. I've got a Montfeltro 12 that I'd probably choose but I'd hate to part with any that I currently have. Since I haven't duck hunted in years, and likely won't again, I don't really need 3" shells, so my old SKB 500 would probably do anything I need done in shot gunning. Depends on what your all purpose gun really needs to do. My uncle used a 20ga Savage double for everything. No one thought he made a mistake in choosing that, until it was time to clean it.

Why? There is less involved in cleaning a double barrel.

Exactly, I have a Savage Fox 20 SxS; cleaning is a piece of cake

I never could get the folks who want one gun to do everything. A jack of all trades is a master of none. Better to have a few that are well-made, fitted to you and set up for a particular tasks (or a few very similar).

It has twice as many barrels as a pump or autoloader.

It was only meant as a joke. He used to say "not many ducks today. I'll only have to clean one barrel." Everyone else in the blind would all say Me too!

I thin for wht your saying the 12ga is absolutely the way to go. I've used a number of them and today don't own one! My heavy gun in a 16ga SxS but I also have a 16ga Mod 37 pump. Most important thing was the choke but those choke tubes have stopped that worry. But for all around I always liked a mod choke.
