I entered the Benelli world Monday when I bought a like new M2. Except for shooting My Grandpa’s sweet sixteen a few times when I was a teenager in the sixties, I have never shouldered an automatic shotgun. I avidly hunted quail as a kid and until the fire ants made them virtually extinct here in NorthEast Texas. In the early years I hunted with an Ithaca SKB side by side, and later with a 28 gauge over under. I shot skeet tournaments during the nineties and into the early two thousands, but lost interest as other things entered my life, and the Quail going away had something to do with it.

Life has gone through changes and I really miss Quail hunting. Early last year I fell and injured my right shoulder. The MRI showed a nine millimeter growth in my right shoulder. At that point it hurt to even think of shouldering a shotgun and firing it. The shoulder has improved, but not completely healed.

I have always wanted to hunt pheasant, but never had the chance. Sunday night my son in law invited me to go to Kansas in January for a Quail and Pheasant hunt. I immediately accepted the invitation thinking that I would enjoy watching the dogs work if I can’t shoot. Monday morning visiting with friends I started asking about their automatic shotguns as a possible way to decrease recoil and have a chance to shoot. One of the guys talked about a mutual friends Benelli that he had borrowed and said it would make a difference for me. Another guy in the conversation who is an avid cowboy action shooter put me onto a reputable gun shop with a shotgun specialist. And I went there after running some errands.

I told the guru at the gun shop my situation but not about the Benelli recommendation, and he went straight to a used Benelli M2 that was on the rack. It fit me perfectly when I shouldered it. It fit me as well as my Winchester 101 Skeet gun which I have so much time with. When I started asking about chokes for it, he pulled out the case. A complete set of chokes and all the papers and book were in there. It was very much like new. The original owner didn’t have it long and traded it for whatever reason. I got it for $1200 which appeared to be a fair price.

We left to go to a different daughters place near Dripping Springs, Texas for Thanksgiving. This other son in law has a neat range that he’s put into a little ravine on the back of his place, and recently upgraded his range target thrower. I had brought a couple of cases of targets and a case of shells. By the way, this gun is in twelve gauge. I wanted to try that first thinking if my shoulder could take it I wouldn’t handicap myself with a 20 or 28 as I did intentionally when younger.

We went out yesterday, and I started with a few target loads that were still in the box I used to carry to skeet tournaments. Recoil wise, it was like shooting a .22 as far as what my shoulder was telling me. After a few of those I went to 1 1/8 oz field loads and it still felt like a .22.

I wasn’t shooting very well, but the gun was not the cause. I haven’t shotgunned in probably 15 or 16 years. The trees were making it hard for a seventy year old guy with aging eyes to pick up the targets. I truly believe that live birds won’t be near the problem. I’m pretty confident I can hit the Quail. We’ll see how it goes hitting the pheasant since I don’t know what to expect.

I’ve gone seventy years with the prejudice that anyone shooting an automatic is just a Woos. Well, just call me a Woos and let me shoot my Benelli. What a wonderful shotgun.

I divorced my H&K SBE back in 1996...I really wanted it to work out...but after she let me down for the third time in a duck blind...I finally accepted the fact that the union between us was not meant to last. The story does have a happy ending...after I got over her, I met the most wonderful Beretta any man could ever ask for...and we have shared many happy memories together, going on 22 years now...and she has not yet missed a step!
